Eastside Love Story: Ajaxx’s Effortless Vibe and West Coast Legacy

Jaxx Cover HIGH 1

Hailing from Watts, California, Ajaxx is a multifaceted artist and engineer whose journey through the music industry feels like a natural progression, rooted deeply in his upbringing and musical influences. With a father who wrote for legendary artists, Ajaxx was immersed in music from an early age, and it was clear that he was destined to create his own sound. His path into music began with a deep passion for engineering, where he spent countless hours mixing and recording in his home studio, perfecting his craft. His journey evolved when a close friend encouraged him to take his talents seriously, leading Ajaxx to enroll at the prestigious Los Angeles Recording School in 2012, where he earned a degree in Recording Arts.

After graduation, Ajaxx dove headfirst into the industry, landing internships at powerhouses like Midi Mafia (known for their work on 50 Cent’s 21 Questions) and Atlantic Records. His time working at Rostrum Records, Roc Nation, and other influential labels allowed him to perfect his craft behind the scenes, but all along, his heart was set on becoming an artist himself.

Ajaxx’s sound is deeply inspired by the West Coast vibe, with a particular influence from Dom Kennedy, a staple in the region’s scene. His latest release, Eastside Love Story, encapsulates this effortlessly cool style, a seven-track project that tells a vivid, relatable story from start to finish. Remembering Kiki Shepard: Apollo Legend Dies at 74

Memorial Post Kiki

The culture just lost a true trailblazer. Kiki Shepard, the vibrant TV personality, actress, and fierce community advocate, has died at the age of 74. Born Chiquita Renee Shepard, she unexpectedly passed away on Monday, March 16, following a heart attack, as confirmed by her representative.

For decades, Shepard brought an unapologetic authenticity to our screens. She set a massive standard for Black excellence, style, and grace. Her presence on television celebrated diversity and individuality long before it was an industry standard, making her a beloved figure across multiple generations.

A Foundation of Black Excellence

Born in Tyler, Texas, Shepard knew early on that education and drive were essential tools for making a global impact. She excelled academically, first attending North Texas State University before finding her footing at the illustrious Howard University. There, she proudly joined the Delta Sigma Theta sorority, a historic sisterhood dedicated to public service, community empowerment, and social action.

Shepard refused to be boxed into a single category. Showcasing her brilliant mind alongside her undeniable creative talent, she graduated in the top 10% of her class with a degree in Business Administration.

Gracing the Stage and Screen

Most of us know and love her from those legendary late nights watching Showtime at the Apollo. From 1987 to 2002, Shepard co-hosted the iconic Harlem talent showcase alongside comedy giants like Steve Harvey and Sinbad. She quickly earned the title “Apollo Queen of Fashion.” Her signature sense of humor and breathtaking outfits made her a trendsetting staple in our living rooms, showcasing a level of glamour that commanded total respect.

She dominated Broadway stages throughout the 1970s and 1980s, performing in culturally significant productions like Bubbling Brown Sugar (1976), Comin’ Uptown (1979), Reggae (1980), and Your Arms Too Short to Box With God (1980, 1982). She later left her mark on network television as a talented actress and voice actor, bringing her unique energy to hit shows like A Different World, NYPD Blue, and Baywatch.

Championing the Sickle Cell Community

Shepard’s influence extended far beyond the realm of entertainment. She dedicated a massive portion of her life to uplifting others, becoming a loud, compassionate, and passionate voice for the sickle cell community.

Through her relentless advocacy work, she challenged society to pay attention to a disease that disproportionately affects Black communities. She hosted annual celebrity bowling tournaments and fundraising events, proving that true influence means using your platform to spark meaningful conversations and drive real, tangible change. She actively promoted community support and self-care, ensuring those battling sickle cell disease felt seen and heard.

Known for his unmistakable voice and unapologetic authenticity, Sear helped shape the culture of hip-hop radio for over two decades.

Whether he was spinning tracks for emerging legends in the 1990s or connecting with a global audience on his daily show, Sear brought a vibrant energy to the airwaves. This post celebrates his monumental contributions to the music world, tracing his journey from a New York DJ to a globally recognized hip-hop authority.

A Force on the Airwaves

Shade 45, the Eminem-founded SiriusXM station where Sear hosted his beloved programs, confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media. While a cause of death was not disclosed, the focus quickly shifted to celebrating his massive impact on the station and the culture at large.

“Sear was more than a voice on the radio,” Shade 45 shared in their official statement. “He was a force, a friend, and family to so many of us!”

To honor his memory, the station will run a special memorial broadcast on March 12 during his usual time slot, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. EST. Friends, collaborators, and fans will gather to share memories and celebrate the incredible life he lived.

From New York Roots to Global Reach

Born and raised in New York as Steve Watson, Lord Sear’s journey into hip-hop royalty started on the turntables. He first captured the attention of real hip-hop heads as a touring DJ for Kurious. His undeniable talent soon led him to the legendary Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show on WKCR in the 1990s.

Watson eventually transitioned into a co-host role, helping to build an early, trendsetting platform for some of the greatest artists of all time. During his tenure, the show provided crucial early exposure for foundational hip-hop acts, including:

  • Jay-Z
  • Nas
  • Wu-Tang Clan

Finding a Home at Shade 45

In 2004, Watson brought his talents to Shade 45. His magnetic personality quickly made him a fan favorite, leading him to join Eminem on the massive Anger Management World Tour.

He began his SiriusXM tenure co-hosting The All Out Show alongside Rude Jude. Eventually, he launched his own highly successful program, The Lord Sear Special, which he proudly hosted until his passing. Sear’s broadcasting style was defined by his raw honesty and genuine love for the music.

“I really like doing my show. I have fun doing it because it’s what I wanna do,” Watson explained to the blog The Real Hip-Hop in 2017. ”I play what I wanna play and I talk my shit, give people credit, and still have fun…It’s good for me, it’s good for my heart, it’s good for my soul.”

Beyond the Mic: Music and Gaming Legacy

Lord Sear’s creative output extended far beyond the radio booth. As an artist and collaborator, he worked with some of the most innovative minds in the industry, leaving his fingerprints all over classic hip-hop records. He collaborated with legends like the Beastie Boys, MF DOOM, and Statik Selektah.

He also released his own music, dropping two memorable 12-inch solo singles:

  • “Alcoholic Vibes / My Hindu Love” (1997)
  • “Hello! (The Wake Up Call)” (2000)

Gamers will also instantly recognize his voice. Sear lent his vocal talents to the groundbreaking video games Grand Theft Auto III in 2001 and Grand Theft Auto IV in 2008, forever cementing his place in pop culture history.

The Hip-Hop Community Pays Tribute

Saint Pat Beatz and Traffic Unite for ‘Don’t Worry Bout Nothin,’ a West Coast Street Album

Image0 8

Los Angeles producer Saint Pat Beatz has built his reputation on intention. His production style blends cinematic textures, drum-first arrangements, and heavy low-end engineered to resonate in real spaces. Rooted in the discipline and sampling traditions of hip-hop’s golden era, his sound also carries the clarity and impact required for today’s streaming platforms. Soulful loops, orchestral flourishes, and modern 808 weight often collide in his records, creating a sonic identity that feels both timeless and contemporary.

Over the past several years, Saint Pat Beatz has quietly developed a strong presence across the independent hip-hop landscape. His production has powered records from emerging and established artists alike, landing on curated playlists across major digital service providers while helping drive six-figure streaming numbers. Beyond supplying beats, he has increasingly stepped into executive production roles guiding full EPs and albums from concept to completion. That approach has allowed him to shape projects holistically, ensuring the sound, sequencing, and storytelling feel cohesive. His compositions have also crossed into digital media licensing and promotional campaigns, expanding his reach beyond traditional hip-hop releases.

That same collaborative and visionary approach comes to life on “Don’t Worry Bout Nothin“, a 14-track album created alongside Los Angeles artist Traffic. The project represents more than a producer-artist pairing, it’s a fully realized body of work that captures the rhythm of everyday life in the streets while maintaining the polish and structure of a carefully curated album.

At its core, the project captures a familiar but enduring theme within hip-hop: resilience. The album’s title itself reflects a mindset staying focused, moving through obstacles, and continuing to push forward regardless of outside noise. That perspective is echoed in the music, where street wisdom, ambition, and everyday survival intersect.

With Don’t Worry Bout Nothin“, Saint Pat Beatz further solidifies his reputation as a producer capable of building full-scale projects, not just individual records. Alongside Traffic, he delivers a body of work that blends West Coast street perspective with polished, cinematic production an album designed to resonate with listeners who understand both the struggle and the motivation behind the grind.

Digital Underground Celebrates 35 Years of ‘Sex Packets’ With Deluxe Reissue and Unreleased Music

Digital

Thirty-five years after its original release, Sex Packets, the groundbreaking debut from Bay Area hip-hop collective Digital Underground, is returning in a newly remastered and expanded anniversary edition. The reissue arrives March 27 via Tommy Boy Records, celebrating an album that helped reshape the sonic and cultural boundaries of rap in the early 1990s.

Originally released in 1990, Sex Packets introduced listeners to the world of Digital Underground mastermind Shock G, whose comedic alter ego Humpty Hump delivered one of hip-hop’s most memorable openings: “Alright, stop what you’re doin’, ’cause I’m about to ruin…” That line launched the group’s signature hit, The Humpty Dance, a funk-driven anthem inspired by the psychedelic grooves of George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic universe.

The 35th anniversary edition of Sex Packets will be available across multiple formats, including 180-gram light blue and black-on-clear splatter 2LP vinyl, 2CD, and digital. Alongside newly remastered audio, the expanded release adds five bonus tracks, including the previously unreleased “Blue View,” the rare full version of “Gutfest ’89,” and “A Tribute to the Early Days,” which originally appeared only on cassette versions of the album. Fans will also hear “The Humpty Dance (Humpstramental Mix)” and the Mini-Hump Radio Mix of the song, the latter available exclusively on digital platforms.

Digital Underground would continue evolving throughout the 1990s, famously providing an early platform for rising talents including Saafir and Tupac Shakur. Meanwhile, Shock G built a respected production resume that included collaborations with Prince, Tupac, and Luniz.

Following Shock G’s passing in 2021, the legacy of Sex Packets remains deeply embedded in hip-hop’s history an album that blended humor, funk, and fearless creativity at a time when the genre was still defining its possibilities. This 35th anniversary edition offers longtime fans and new listeners alike a chance to revisit a record that helped shape the playful, boundary-pushing spirit of rap’s golden era. Pre order HERE
