Known for his unmistakable voice and unapologetic authenticity, Sear helped shape the culture of hip-hop radio for over two decades.

Whether he was spinning tracks for emerging legends in the 1990s or connecting with a global audience on his daily show, Sear brought a vibrant energy to the airwaves. A Force on the Airwaves

Shade 45, the Eminem-founded SiriusXM station where Sear hosted his beloved programs, confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media. While a cause of death was not disclosed, the focus quickly shifted to celebrating his massive impact on the station and the culture at large.

“Sear was more than a voice on the radio,” Shade 45 shared in their official statement. “He was a force, a friend, and family to so many of us!”

To honor his memory, the station will run a special memorial broadcast on March 12 during his usual time slot, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. EST. Friends, collaborators, and fans will gather to share memories and celebrate the incredible life he lived.

Born and raised in New York as Steve Watson, Lord Sear’s journey into hip-hop royalty started on the turntables. He first captured the attention of real hip-hop heads as a touring DJ for Kurious. His undeniable talent soon led him to the legendary Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show on WKCR in the 1990s.

Watson eventually transitioned into a co-host role, helping to build an early, trendsetting platform for some of the greatest artists of all time. During his tenure, the show provided crucial early exposure for foundational hip-hop acts, including:

Thirty-five years after its original release, Sex Packets, the groundbreaking debut from Bay Area hip-hop collective Digital Underground, is returning in a newly remastered and expanded anniversary edition. The reissue arrives March 27 via Tommy Boy Records, celebrating an album that helped reshape the sonic and cultural boundaries of rap in the early 1990s.

Originally released in 1990, Sex Packets introduced listeners to the world of Digital Underground mastermind Shock G, whose comedic alter ego Humpty Hump delivered one of hip-hop’s most memorable openings: “Alright, stop what you’re doin’, ’cause I’m about to ruin…” That line launched the group’s signature hit, The Humpty Dance, a funk-driven anthem inspired by the psychedelic grooves of George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic universe.

The 35th anniversary edition of Sex Packets will be available across multiple formats, including 180-gram light blue and black-on-clear splatter 2LP vinyl, 2CD, and digital. Alongside newly remastered audio, the expanded release adds five bonus tracks, including the previously unreleased “Blue View,” the rare full version of “Gutfest ’89,” and “A Tribute to the Early Days,” which originally appeared only on cassette versions of the album. During Black History Month this year, C‑Nice, an artist from Long Beach, transformed the month into a powerful blend of hip-hop, community advocacy, and cultural storytelling. Through an ambitious creative rollout titled the “Lyrical Spotlight Series,” the artist released 28 freestyle performances across 28 days, mostly filmed at a different Black-owned business. The series didn’t just celebrate entrepreneurship; it amplified it turning everyday spaces into stages for lyricism and visibility.

Captured by Oasis Imagery and creatively directed by Khrissy B, the series carried a simple yet impactful concept: every day in February, a new freestyle, a new business, and a new story. From tattoo parlors to ice cream shops and Pilates studios, the project highlighted the diversity of Black entrepreneurship throughout Southern California. Each freestyle served as both a performance and a platform, where bars met branding and culture.

For C-Nice, the series was not simply a content rollout, it was a continuation of a career built on authenticity and intention. The Long Beach–bred artist and songwriter has long been recognized for sharp lyricism, layered storytelling, and a grounded sense of cultural purpose. His music reflects the West Coast tradition of narrative-driven hip-hop while maintaining a voice uniquely his own.

Over the years, his work has reached notable platforms. C-Nice’s records have aired on MTV, received rotation on Los Angeles radio stations, and even landed him an appearance on the late-night talk show Chelsea Lately. He has also collaborated with Grammy-winning artist Kendrick Lamar, placing him within a respected lineage of West Coast creatives who prioritize substance alongside sound.
