Beyoncé has taken legal steps to trademark her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. Back in 2012, they tried to secure the trademark through BGK Trademark Holdings LLC. Jay-Z even mentioned in a 2013 Vanity Fair interview that he was worried about people using their child’s name without permission and wanted to protect her from exploitation.

In subsequent years, Beyoncé encountered legal disputes with Veronica Morales, a lifestyle event planner who had utilized the name Blue Ivy in her business trademark. This matter was resolved in Beyoncé’s favor in 2020, yet the application process did not proceed further at that time.

In 2024, interest in the Blue Ivy Carter trademark has been reignited. Beyoncé has filed a motion with the federal trademark office after a previous ruling indicated potential conflict with a Wisconsin-based clothing boutique’s similar name, which had been commercially active prior to the birth of Blue Ivy Carter on January 7, 2012.

Beyoncé’s legal representatives are advocating for the trademark, arguing that the public would not confuse Blue Ivy Carter with the boutique, given her prominence in the public eye. BGK attorneys maintain that both parties operate in distinct markets and can coexist without issue.

As of this writing, the Wisconsin boutique has not contested Beyoncé’s trademark application, although it was referenced by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in their initial decision to reject the application.
