Musical legend James Mtume sat down with Sway and talked for almost an hour about his upbringing and career in music. He started with being the son of jazz saxophonist Jimmy Heath, but being raised by his stepfather, a Philadelphia local jazz pianist, James “Hen Gates” Forman. Mtume spoke of legends like Thelonious Monk stopping by his house growing up.
Mtume has made so much music that has traveled generations. He spoke to Sway about what he learned from Miles Davis that helped carry him throughout his career and make these iconic sounds we all know so well.
