Screenwriter Justin Tipping stopped by Sway in the Morning to talk about his new movie Kicks. He’s written films for Sony, Tristate Pictures, the Weinstein Company, and more, plus he had his feature film debut world premiere opening, the US Narrative Competition at the 2016 TriBeCa film festival.
Born and raised in Northern California, Tipping didn’t know you could make a living being behind a camera or in media, so film wasn’t something he always knew he wanted to do. Tipping says that he didn’t really see a lot of people of color as a majority cast in a film and movies like Dope, Fruitvale Station, and Straight Outta Compton made Kicks possible.
Tipping also recalls the time getting robbed, which is in the film, that made him think about how we need to start redefining what it means to become a man. Wondering what he means by that? Watch the interview above for all that and more. Kicks hits select theaters September 9 and nationwide September 15.
