Queens see Queens! Recap Black Girls Rock 2015!

This is why they rock! On Sunday, April 5th marked the 5th annual Black Girls Rock award show. It aired on BET and was hosted by actresses Regina King and Tracee Ellis Ross.

The “Black Girls Rock” movement was originally created as a non-profit organization by Beverly Bond who wanted to create a sisterhood and celebrate young black girls. Especially since society tends to lack diversity and give credit where it’s due for minority women. Each year the organization continues to grow and the award show gets even better.

This year’s honorees were Erykah Badu with the Rock Star Award, Jada Pinkett Smith for the Star Power award, “Selma” director Ava DuVernay received the Shot Caller award and Cicely Tyson was honored with the Living Legend award. Dr. Helene Gayle was awarded the Social Humanitarian Statue  and Brooklyn’s Mott School Academy Principal, Nadia Lopez, was named BGR’s Change Agent.

Just when the star-studded event couldn’t get any better, it did! First lady Michelle Obama graced the stage with a magnificent speech and gave everyone the empowerment needed. The fun never stopped and included performances from Fantasia, Ciara, Faith Evans, Lalah Hathaway, Sister Sledge, Estelle, Alica Myers, and Jill Scott.
