Qatar Spends Half a Billion a Week on 2022 World Cup

Every four years the best of the best in the world of soccer come together for the World Cup. Well today the future of the World Cup is in the news as the word comes down that Qatar is shelling out nearly half a billion dollars a week on the 2022 event. According to Qatar’s finance minister, Ali Shareef Al Emadi that money is being spent on major infrastructure, from stadiums to roads.

Speaking on the project’s Al Emadi stated: “We are spending close to $500m [USD] per week on capital projects,” adding “and this will carry on for the next three to four years to achieve our goal and objective of really getting the country ready for 2022.” Other countries who have hosted to the event have found themselves in massive debt following the event. For example, Brazil spent over $11 billion USD for the 2014 World Cup, while Russia is on pace to spend more than $10 billion USD for 2018′s event.
