There is absolutely no place for the trigger happy police officers who kill unarmed black people at overwhelming rates. It is traumatizing to walk around with the reality that I am likely to end up dead by the hands of a police officer because of my God-given stature and skin color. The recent killing of Jonathan Price has begun to surface to the top of media attention and it is another reminder of the crooked and twisted reality that black people face.
On Oct. 3, in East Texas Witnesses claim Price intervened between a domestic dispute between a man and a woman. When Price stepped in, the man assaulted him. When police arrived, Price asked officer Lucas “You doing good?” multiple times and tried to shake the officer’s hand. Reports say that Officer Lucas attempted to detain Price by grabbing Price’s arm and using verbal commands, which were both unsuccessful. Price was then tased, but the device did not work. Lucas then shot Price four times in the upper torso.
The Wolfe City Police officer Shaun Lucas now faces murder charges for the shooting and killing of Jonathon Price. Lucas was arrested Monday (Oct.5) and following an administrative investigation, he was fired Thursday (Oct.8) for his horrifying violation of the City’s and police department’s policies.
It is a tragedy that we continue to black lives to senseless acts of police brutality. Things must change or there is shameful karma headed for those in power who turn a blind eye to the black blood that is crying out from the pavements.
