Joey Bada$$ vs The West Coast? The Battle’s Heating Up Or is it OVER?

Joey

The rap game just got spicy, and Joey Bada$$ is right in the middle of the fire, throwing lyrical strays like it’s a rap beef from the 90’s. The beef has been cooking since January when Joey originally dropped “The Ruler’s Back” which sparked what seemed like every West Coast Rapper except K.Dot dropping a response to the Badmon. Problem, Daylyt, Ray Vaughn, Curtiss King, CJ Fly are just a few of the names who felt moved enough to throw some bars back to the East Coast big stepper. And now the beef has elevated in a friendly lyrical sparring session on the Red Bull Spiral Cypher with Joey, Big Sean, and Ab-Soul has turned into an all-out war of bars, with Joey channeling his inner 2Pac, and declaring open season on the West Coast. Right now, Joey is in that “one-man army” mode. He’s embraced the villain role and is dishing out calculated bars with precision. While the West Coast is mobilizing with multiple voices—Ray Vaughn, REASON, AzChike, and Daylyt—Joey hasn’t backed down. In fact, he seems more charged up.

Let’s break everything down post Red Bull Cypher like a true student of the culture:

The Cypher That Kicked It OFF

Red Bull Spiral (Season 3, Episode 1) Joey Bada$$, Big Sean, and Ab-Soul went head-to-head in a healthy lyrical competition. At first glance, it looked like three elite emcees just having fun, showing off penmanship and style. But Joey’s energy stood out—more pointed, more aggressive. He came with something to prove. But we MUST point out AB-Soul (Carson, CA standup) how he had to let ya’ll know “I’m still outside” and one of the best on the mic.

“Ho* Era” – Ray Vaughn Responds

TDE’s Ray Vaughn didn’t waste time. He fired back with “Ho* Era,”* a slick clapback aimed at Joey, defending the West’s honor and letting it be known that TDE ain’t letting anything slide. Ray matched Joey’s energy with sharp delivery and clever jabs, signaling the West was officially engaged. But was it enough to keep Joey off of him??

“Finals” – Joey Fires Another Shot

Joey doubles back with “Finals,” and this one hits harder with immaculate punchlines and direct jabs to his opponents (calling out TDE the label). He comes with layered bars, and one in particular sets social media on fire:

“I let ’em rot while I charge ’em for top dollar / You’re the next nigga gettin’ dropped off the Top roster / And I’ma be the REASON okay, bet you sick dog lookin’ for beef with a seasoned vet”

The “Top roster” and “REASON” line was surgical—name-dropping REASON while playing on his TDE affiliation. The bar was slick and strategic, daring REASON to jump in.

“The Dead Apple” – REASON Joins the Battle

REASON answers the call with “The Dead Apple,” a layered response where he flips Joey’s line and adds his own flavor. He positions himself as a worthy rapper that can go bar for bar, not just defending his coast but proving his pen. It’s no longer about one or two artists—it’s coast vs coast. Reason raps over 3 beats and closes out with a curve ball from Ja Rules “New York” record. Reason’s stance is very personal telling the rap fans in his diss “This ain’t the New York that I know”

“What Would You Do?” – AzChike Enters the Chat

South Central’s own AzChike throws his fitted into the ring with “What Would You Do?” It’s gritty, it’s disrespectful, and it’s street. AzChike brings the hood energy, making it clear this ain’t just for lyrical Twitter debates—he’s standing on business, but was it enough to get in the ring with the lyrical giants?

“Golden Eye” – Ray Vaughn Crashes Out

Ray Vaughn crashes out with lots of aggression coming back for Joey AGAIN. Addressing Diddy affiliations and defending his position with TDE- “Thinking I ain’t got his number, he authorized the hit” Addresses TDEast, Pro Era and SerayahRay Vaughn isn’t backing down it seems, but is he truly studying his opponent and throwing out fact cards?

“WRDMIMVA” & “Ayo” – Daylyt Attempts To Add Pressure

Then comes the wildcard—Daylyt—with not one but two tracks: “WRDMIMVA” and “Ayo.” The lyrical alien fans know him to be touches down and goes full Jedi on Joey with coded rhymes, and witty punches. Daylyt is unpredictable but is he rushing the process of responding and not also having a strategic plan of attack? The delivery now seems loud all over the place and most fans aren’t too happy!

THE FINALE: JOEY BADA$$ “MY TOWN” W/LOADED LUX” & “CRASH DUMMY”

Joey Bada$$ just lit the booth on fire with “My Town” w/loaded Lux following “Crash Dummy” and he’s not playing fair. Flipping Tupac’s iconic “Hit ‘Em Up” instrumental on Crash Dummy was a power move in itself—one of the most disrespectful diss records in rap history—and Joey pulled it off with calculated precision.

He didn’t just rap over the beat—he embodied it. From the energy to the cadence, Joey tapped into the rawness of the West while still bringing that East Coast precession. It’s like he studied the blueprint of how to step into enemy territory. “My Town” adding the well respected battle rapper Loaded Lux was brilliant.

Hip-hop beef feels exciting and like the sport it’s suppose to be. The industry’s watching. Fans are choosing sides. And the pen game is front and center. Let’s see who plans to step in the ring next!!!!!!!!!!

Celebrating Iconic Legacies: Kiki Shepard and Luenell’s Tributes to the Apollo Theatre 🎭

LUENELL KIKI

The Apollo Theater, a cultural cornerstone of Harlem, has seen countless legends grace its stage. Among those legends are Kiki Shepard, the poised and trailblazing host of Showtime at the Apollo, and Luenell, a comedic powerhouse who brings her unapologetic authenticity to every performance. Recently, these two phenomenal women shared the stage on Sway In The Morning, reminiscing about their journeys and the enduring impact of their contributions to entertainment and culture.

Kiki Shepard: The Queen of Showtime at the Apollo 👑

When you think of Showtime at the Apollo, it’s impossible not to picture Kiki Shepard’s grace, elegance, and unmatched presence. Starting as a trained dancer in ballet, jazz, and modern, Kiki seamlessly transitioned into hosting, capturing hearts every week with her infectious charm and style. “Before there was Naomi Campbell, Beverly Johnson, or Tyra Banks, we had Kiki,” Luenell emphasized, shining a light on Kiki’s role as a trailblazer for Black women in entertainment.

Kiki reflected on her time at the Apollo, starting in 1989, when the venue epitomized the golden era of hip-hop and R&B. From hosting during Heavy D and Tupac’s reign to witnessing iconic performances by Yolanda Adams and Jodeci, Kiki marveled at the show’s cultural significance. “It wasn’t just a job; it was ordained,” she said, explaining how the role felt like divine alignment, paving the way for her impactful career.

Luenell’s Love Letter to Harlem and the Apollo ✨

Luenell, known for her fearless comedy and realness, delivered heartfelt praises for Kiki, calling her “a motherf*ing icon.” Luenell herself recently headlined a sold-out show at the Apollo Theater, a significant milestone that she described as a personal love letter to Harlem. “The Apollo isn’t just a venue; it’s a legacy,” she shared, honoring the historic stage where James Brown and the Temptations once performed.

True to her theatrical nature, Luenell made it a mission to bring Kiki back to the Apollo for her show. The emotional moment of Kiki walking onto the stage after years away was “magnificent,” she shared, with the audience erupting in applause. “You don’t realize the impact you’ve made until you step back into the world and see how much people remember and respect you,” Kiki reflected.

Timeless Lessons on Legacy and Aging 🌟

Beyond their stories of success, Kiki and Luenell delved into a deeper conversation about aging in the entertainment industry. “You’re either going to age, or you’re going to die,” Kiki stated bluntly, emphasizing the importance of embracing one’s journey and legacy. Luenell echoed this sentiment, celebrating the resilience it takes to remain relevant as a Black woman in a youth-focused industry. “I’m not part of a show, but I’ve built my own lane. That’s the power of authenticity,” Luenell added.

The Cultural Impact of Showtime at the Apollo 🎤

As the host of Showtime at the Apollo, Kiki Shepard became a symbol of Black excellence during an era when representation on television was limited. From hip-hop icons like Eric B. & Rakim and MC Lyte to comedians and gospel legends like Yolanda Adams, the Apollo stage was a launching pad for diverse talent. “Every week, people wanted to know: What will Kiki wear? What will Kiki do?” she recalled, highlighting how her presence brought excitement to millions of homes.

Luenell’s tribute to Kiki underscored the importance of lifting up those who paved the way. “More people need to reach back and link us together,” Luenell urged, stressing the value of mentorship and sisterhood in sustaining cultural legacies.

Advocacy Beyond the Spotlight: Kiki’s Fight Against Sickle Cell 💪

While Kiki’s work on Showtime at the Apollo cemented her place in television history, her advocacy for sickle cell disease has solidified her legacy as a changemaker. For nearly 30 years, Kiki has raised awareness and funds through the K.I.S (Keeping It Sickle) Foundation. “If I stop being Kiki, I stop being me,” she declared, affirming her dedication to using her platform for good.

Celebrate with Luenell and Kiki: A Night at the Apollo 🎭

For those in the Tri-State area, Luenell’s sold-out Apollo show was more than comedy—it was a celebration of Harlem, sisterhood, and artistry. Kiki joined her onstage, bringing full-circle the cultural significance of the historic venue. “This isn’t just a show; it’s an experience,” Luenell promised. And for those looking forward to more, Luenell continues her residency at the Jamie Kimmel Comedy Club in Vegas every Sunday and Monday.

Conclusion: Honoring Legends, Building Legacies 🙌

Kiki Shepard and Luenell remind us that true icons don’t just entertain—they inspire, uplift, and pave the way for others. Their conversation highlighted the importance of legacy, resilience, and celebrating those who’ve shaped culture.
