Despite a statement by police commissioner William Bratton not to turn their backs as they did during the recent funeral of Officer Rafael Ramos, thousands of NYPD officers once again chose not to face New York mayor Bill de Blasio as he spoke during the funeral of Wenjian Liu, the second officer slain during a December 20 attack.
Said an officer participating in the display, “I can’t even stand looking at him. He has no friends here.”
The bitter feud between law enforcement and city officials first started following a grand jury decision not to bring charges against the officer responsible for choking an unarmed Eric Garner. Faced with growing criticism against law enforcement, officers claim the Mayor turned his back on them in favor of protesters.
