Authorities in Mississippi have been joined by the FBI as they investigate the death of an African-American man found hanging from a tree. The man has been identified as Otis Byrd, who was reported missing by his family and had not been seen for nearly three weeks. The 54-year-old was found near his home after last being seen March 2, though it is currently not known whether he was lynched or if suicide is to blame.
According to Claiborne County Sheriff Marvin Lucas, “We got a young man that died and we’re going to determine how he died and if someone did that, that person will be brought to justice and he will be punished for that.”
