Miami Police Force Under Fire For Using Minority Mugshots For Target Practice

A routine visit to a Florida gun range turned into anything but for Sgt. Valerie Deant who discovered that authorities using the Medley Firearms Training Center had also been using the mug shots of former criminals for target practice. Even more disturbing was the discovery that one of the photos used was of her own brother, Woody Deant, who had been arrested 15 years earlier in connection with drag racing.

“I was like why is my brother being used for target practice? There were like gunshots there and I cried a couple of times,” said the shocked Sargent.

Also shocked was her brother, who served 4 years in connection to the crime “Now I’m being used as a target? I’m not even living that life according to how they portrayed me as. I’m a father. I’m a husband. I’m a career man. I work 9-5.”

Despite the controversy, North Miami Beach Police Chief J. Scott Dennis dismisses accusations of racism explaining, “Our policies were not violated. There is no discipline forthcoming from the individuals who were involved with this.”
