Jay-Z Pushes For Police Reform During Meeting With Governor Andrew Cuomo

While various NBA players like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Kyrie Irving  and more have chosen to wear “I Can’t Breathe” shirts in support of Eric Garner who died after being illegally choked by the NYPD, Hip Hop mogul Jay Z took a behind the scenes approach as he met privately with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo to push for police reform in the wake of a string of minorities killed at the hands of authorities.

According to Cuomo’s Director of Communications Melissa DeRosa:

“Governor Cuomo and Shawn ‘Jay Z’ Csarter had a productive conversation about doing a top to bottom review of the Criminal Justice system and how we can all work together to pass a reform package that ensures equality in the eyes of the law.”

Many of the emcee’s efforts have been done largely outside of the private eye, including paying the tuition of Sean Bell’s children (Bell was killed by the NYPD in 2009,) as well as providing funds for Ferguson protesters. While many have praised these contributions, publications like Fox News and the New York Post were slammed after running headlines that read “Governor Meets With Ex-Crack Dealer.”
