After an extended hiatus, J. Stone is back with his latest single, “Up The River,” available now on all major streaming platforms. The record serves as the first preview of his upcoming album, Minor Setbacc Major Comebacc, arriving July 31, 2026.
On “Up The River,” J. Stone offers an honest reflection of his current reality, detailing the challenges of pursuing music while incarcerated. Rather than shying away from his circumstances, he confronts them head-on, explaining why the album contains no guest appearances or outside production. According to Stone, the absence of collaborators wasn’t a creative decision, it was simply the result of no one reaching out. Instead, he transformed that isolation into motivation, delivering a record that speaks to resilience, self-reliance, and his determination to continue creating despite the odds.
The song’s stripped-down production mirrors its message. Recorded in a small studio space using an MPC, “Up The River” captures the resourcefulness required to make music with limited tools and even more limited freedom.
Stone’s legal battle stretches back to a 2017 armed robbery case that went through two separate trials. The first ended in a hung jury, with 11 of the 12 jurors voting to acquit. Prosecutors later retried the case, and a second trial concluded with a unanimous guilty verdict. Before sentencing, Stone submitted character letters from respected figures and organizations, along with documentation of his community involvement, in hopes of receiving a reduced sentence. He was ultimately sentenced to six years in prison and has remained in custody since February 5, 2024.
That experience shapes the foundation of both “Up The River” and Minor Setbacc Major Comebacc. More than just a collection of songs, the project chronicles perseverance through adversity, with its title reflecting Stone’s belief that today’s setback is only setting the stage for a greater comeback.
J. Stone’s “Up The River” is streaming now on all DSPs, while Minor Setbacc Major Comebacc is scheduled for release on July 31, 2026.
