GRAMMY-nominated artist, actor, and filmmaker Vic Mensa is set to launch his first Kickstarter campaign for Halfrican, an original short film he is co-directing with Edgar Esteves. The project follows a Black American artist, played by Mensa, who faces detention and scrutiny for his public statements, alongside a multi-racial ensemble whose members blame each other rather than the system that confines them.
The Kickstarter campaign aims to fund the development of Halfrican into a longer narrative, showcasing how underrepresented voices can create opportunities independently of traditional gatekeepers. By partnering with Kickstarter, Mensa joins a platform that has supported filmmakers like Spike Lee, Chloe Zhao, Nia DaCosta, Matthew A. Cherry, and Issa Rae, helping launch Oscar-nominated and festival-featured projects.
Mensa presented a first look at Halfrican during SXSW 2026, highlighting how artists are expanding from music into film and other visual storytelling avenues. The SXSW session included actor-musician Olly Sholotan and a special introduction from Kickstarter Film Lead Taylor K. Shaw-Omachonu.
The Kickstarter campaign, going live in April 2026, will allow backers to support the next chapter of Halfrican and receive rewards such as behind-the-scenes access, livestreams, exclusive merchandise, and in-person experiences with Mensa and the creative team. This campaign marks a new chapter in Mensa’s creative journey, blending music, film, and social commentary. Fans and supporters can stay updated and be the first to back the project by signing up for notifications ahead of the Kickstarter launch HERE
