The 57th Grammy Awards: R&B Nominees

Tonight is the night. The city of Los Angeles will have all on eyes on them as the Staples Center is filled with tremendous talent and artists hope to the hear their name immediately following “and the Grammy goes to….” but who has that chance in the R&B world? There are a few expected names on the list but also some names you may not be quite as familiar with which is a great thing, never too late to be put on new talent.

Let’s take a quick look at the list of this year’s R&B nominations:

Best R&B Performance Nominees:

Beyonce – Drunk in Love
Chris Brown featuring Usher & Rick Ross – New Flame
Jennifer Hudson featuring R. Kelly – It’s Your World
Ledisi – Like This
Usher – Good Kisser

Contributor Choice: Chris Brown featuring Usher & Rick Ross New Flame. While Beyonce‘s “Drunk in Love” may be the popular choice, it is a joy to see three artists get on the same page and put together something as successful as “New Flame” contributing equally yet with their own touch.

Best Traditional R&B Performance Nominees:

Marsha Ambrosius featuring Anthony HamiltonAs
Angie FisherI.R.S.
Robert Glasper Experiment featuring Lalah Hathaway & Malcolm Jamal WarnerJesus Children
KemNobody
Antonique SmithHold Up Wait a Minute (Woo Woo)

Contibutor Choice: Another difficult decision as Marsha Ambrosius and Anthony Hamilton are incredible together on The Best Man Holiday soundtrack but the nod has to go to Kem in this category.

Best R&B Song Nominees:

BeyonceDrunk in Love
UsherGood Kisser
Chris Brown featuring Usher and Rick RossNew Flame
Luke JamesOptions
Jhene AikoThe Worst

Contributor Choice: Beyonce “Drunk in Love” can’t have the impact that it did this year in music and walk away empty handed, so she gets the nod here despite Jhene Aiko “The Worst” putting up an intense fight.

Best Urban Contemporary Album Nominees:

Jhene AikoSail Out
BeyonceBeyonce
Chris BrownX
Mali MusicMali is…
Pharrell WilliamsGirl

Contributor ChoicePharrell Williams, Girl. The impact of “Happy” speaks for itself but followed up by songs like “Marilyn Monroe” and the concept behind the album’s creation gives Pharrell the edge here.

Best R&B Album Nominees:

BernhoftIslander
Aloe BlaccLift Your Spirit
Toni Braxton & BabyfaceLove, Marriage & Divorce
Robert Glasper ExperimentBlack Radio 2
Sharon Jones & The Dap-KingsGive The People What They Want

Contributor Choice: Torn between Aloe Blacc, Bernhoft and Robert Glasper Experiment the decision has to go to Robert Glasper Experiment or maybe Aloe Blacc, now it swings back to Bernhoft. Since a draw cannot be announced, the choice has to be Aloe Blacc but it definitely wasn’t easy.

While the speculation is fun, it is time to find out who will be adding “Grammy winner” to their name as the 57th Grammy Awards air on CBS tonight at 8/7c. Be sure to tune in and tweet us @SwaysUniverse with your reactions as the winners are announced. Enjoy Citizens.
