The 2016 BET Awards Brought Out Some of the Best Performances We’ve Seen in Awhile

Last night was the 2016 BET Awards and everyone brought their A game.  While Prince’s tribute was not exactly the greatest at other award shows, BET was determined to show out…and boyyyyy, did they ever.  Although their are a couple of award shows left for the year, it’s going to be hard to top these performances.  Check them out below.

While I’m not going to get into the powerful, and I do mean powerful performance by Beyonce and Kendrick (mainly because you can read about it here), I will say I am immensely proud of King Kendrick.  He’s come a long way from rapping about “daydreamin’ about Beyonce” to performing alongside her.  Let that be a lesson to everyone: anything is possible…just keep working towards it.  Watch Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar perform “Freedom” here.

Starting off the many Prince tributes we saw throughout the night, Erykah Badu puts some soul in “Ballad of Dorothy Parker” and Bilal gets into full Prince mode while the Roots rocked out behind him.  Watch their performance here.

Usher takes his song “No Limit” to the next level complete with bomb dance moves accompanied by internet sensation Kida the Great and an appearance by Thugger Thug himself.  Watch Usher and Young Thug tear up the stage here.

New York stand up!  French, Joe, and Remy definitely brought that NY vibe to the West Coast, and it was much appreciated.  Watch French Montana, Fat Joe, and Remy Ma perform New York’s newest anthem here.

While accepting the award for “Video of the Year”, Ms. Tina told the audience that Beyonce had to leave right after her performance to make her concert in London, but Bey’s newly signed “proteges”, Chloe x Halle, were there to represent and show us why they’re apart of her label Parkwood Entertainment.  Watch Chloe x Halle perform “Drop” here.

It’s hard to believe that Desiigner can still get hype performing his hit song “Panda”, but I think we have to remember he’s a 19-year old kid from Brooklyn who’s now apart of the G.O.O.D. Music team…I think I’d be that hype too.  Watch Desiigner’s ALWAYS high energy performance for “Panda” here.

Stevie Wonder and Tori Kelly perform a duet of “Take Me With U” and Jennifer Hudson somehow took us to church with her rendition of “Purple Rain”.  We all know Jennifer Hudson has the pipes, but this performance really blew us away.  Watch J Hud, Tori Kelly, and Stevie Wonder perform their tribute to Prince here.

We already know Future makes the ultimate turn up songs, so it’s no surprise his performance last night was “lit”…literally.  Watch Future perform “Wicked” here.

It’s definitely been one hell of a year for Bryson Tiller.  His song “Don’t” took off and with his release of T R A P S O U L, everyone is starting to see why he will be next up.  Performing at this years BET Awards on the mainstage definitely deserves a big congratulations.  Watch Bryson Tiller perform “Exchange” and “Don’t” here.

Alicia Keys, looking gorgeous, as usual, performs her single “In Common” while using a beatmaker on stage and playing the guitar.  Watch Alicia slayyyyyy her performance here.

Maxwell brought the rain while performing his new song “Lake by the Ocean” and tributes Prince by singing “Nothing Compares 2 U”.  Watch it here.

No one showed range like Sheila E’s medley tribute to Prince.  Between the background singers, horns, drums…I mean everything…Sheila E. embodied what Prince was all about: true musicianship and entertainment.  Watch her medley here.

& last, but not least, Janelle Monae brought the funk and energy that would’ve made Prince a very happy man.  Complete with sex appeal, dance moves and beautiful vocals that were on point, check out Janelle’s performance here.
