Only a few things in life are guaranteed like death, taxes, and Soundset Festival taking over Minnesota the Sunday before Memorial Day. Celebrating the festival’s 9th year, Rhymesayers and the Soundset team once again put together a lineup that fully encompasses the genre of rap. The move to the Stage Fairgrounds was huge, a more centralized location in Minneapolis made it so fans could walk, bike and take public transportation much easier to see their favorite rapper’s favorite rapper.
Legendary DJ’s like Marley Marl rub shoulders with bubbling talent like Anderson .Paak before two of the top rappers in the world, A$AP Rocky and Future, take the main stage. Sean “Slug” Daley of Atmosphere whips a golf cart around the grounds nonchalantly before he pleases the crowd of 31,000 performing hits that Minnesota natives know and appreciate so much. Sway moves the crowd with legendary intros and drops knowledge that many people don’t know about these accomplished artists.
At the Fifth Element tent hosted by Heather B, local talent like Baby Shel and Finding Novyon shine bright alongside extravagant lyricists like Pharoahe Monch and Mick Jenkins. Post Malone takes the stage between stops of one of the biggest tours in America right now while Jay Rock is back with vengeance following a recent motorcycle accident.
Energy is always high and the love for rap permeates through the humid Minnesota heat. Born and raised in Minnesota, Soundset brings me joy knowing that these 31,000 people in attendance are discovering artists they may have never heard of. They get to see what Rhymesayers has built over so many years, the infrastructure that makes way for the up and coming Minnesota artists that are putting on for their respective cities.
We had a great time once again and you can re-live this incredible weekend above with our video recap.
