In the last few years, Miguel has risen through the ranks to be one of the most popular singers in the world. He is one of the rare pop artists where it feels like he is sticking to his roots and evolving at the same time — never playing to the trends; just innovating.
Today, he unleashed a song from “circa 1999,” when he was 15 years old. The dusty and smooth R&B track shows us this exact point — how far he has come, yet how true he has stayed. I first heard Miguel on the under-appreciated hip-hop classic, Blu & Exile’s Below the Heavens, crooning sultry hooks and boom-bap records. Today, as a mega-pop-star, it is refreshing to be reminded what cloth Miguel is cut from – and makes me look forward to how he can continue to sew in new stitches.
