A few weeks ago Sway and the crew held a live broadcast in Detroit, during an interview with Royce Da 5’9 he compared the energy in the room as local emcee’s spit to that of the famous Hip Hop Shop. Fast forward to this week, we had the pleasure of having the owner of that fine establishment, Maurice Malone up to Sway in the Morning to speak on his rise in fashion and watching legends like Eminem and Proof rap live in his store.

Starting things off at a young age, Malone remembers tossing stones in his mother’s dryer to stone wash his denim, a move that did’t sit well with his mom but ultimately started the highly successful MoJeans. Making garments for himself at first, his friends took notice and soon started to place orders, the cycle continued until Mo decided that this was something serious he could pursue.

Pushing out $40 million in sales during his prime run, Malone speaks to Sway about having his pieces in department stores next to Willi Wear owned by one of his idols Willi Smith. Opening up about having a hard time getting into high end stores he jokes that he debated calling in to speak to Kanye during his famous SITM rant to tell him that he understood his pain getting noticed. Speaking on his key to success staying in business for so long he states that he’s always had full creative control of his brand, never giving ownership to investors.

Getting back to his time at The Hip Hop Shop he tells Sway about watching Proof battle emcee’s day after day. He also reveals that Proof made Chris Webber mad during a battle after making fun of his infamous time-out blunder in the NCAA Championship game. Talking through the rise of Eminem, Malone remembers his quiet demeanor whenever he was in the shop.
