It’s been nearly a decade since singer/rapper M.I.A. took us soaring with her international Billboard smash “Paper Planes.” Since the singles release, the UK songstress has released two studio albums “Maya” and “Matangi”that were often swept under the radar due to their lack of radio friendly tracks.
M.I.A. continues to refrain from radio friendliness on her new track “Boarders”; an Indian-esque track that pries at social and political issues. The hook is comprised of a series of rhetorical questions like:
“Your beliefs, what’s up with that?” “Your power, what’s up with that?” she asks.
M.I.A. announced her upcoming album, Matahdatah over the summer and premiered a visual for “Matahdatah Scroll 01 Broader Than a Border;” a sound very similar to what can be heard on “Boarders.” While we can predict that the rest of the album will follow suit to this sound, it’ll be interesting to see if she surprises us.
