The Bay Area has to be carrying around an indescribable sense of pride right now as their Golden State Warriors cap one of the most impressive seasons with a fitting NBA Championship. It has been 40 years since the last banner was hung up in Oracle Arena but thanks to an all around effort on both ends of the floor, that 1975 team will have some elite company as they add another title to their franchise history.
Since the beginning of the season Golden State‘s motto has been #StrengthinNumbers and the team embodies that mantra in every sense. From how unselfish they play the game to bonding on the road during flights posting hilarious videos via IG allowing fans to become apart of what was a very special 2014-5 campaign. On any given night, any player on the Golden State roster can hurt you and it was evident not only throughout the Finals but the entire playoff run.
In a matchup that was built up as “The Best Team” vs. “The Best Player” we witnessed almost every basketball cliche you can think of come to life: “Teamwork makes the dream work” “Defense Wins Championships” “Ball Movement equals Easy Shots” so on and so forth. Golden State proved once again that it takes a team effort to win. While Lebron James put up numbers that haven’t been matched in a Finals appearance with two triple doubles on his way to averaging 35.8 pts, 13.3 rebs and 8.8 ast for the series – it just wasn’t enough.
The league MVP Steph Curry who faced a double team most of the series casually ended with 25 points and 8 assists in the series clinching win. The big story however was the outstanding play of Andre Iguodala, who became the first player in NBA history to win the Finals MVP without starting every game. Iggy poured in 22 points in Game 4 and another 25 points tonight, not to mention playing tough defense possession after possession on the opposite end against James while managing to still push the tempo offensively.
The praise however extends beyond just those two as the Golden State team has proven all year, they have one of the deepest rosters in the league. Draymond Green, who is the motor and heart that drives the squad from the very core ended up with a triple double for his efforts in Game 6 (16 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists). Both Shaun Livingston and Harrison Barnes gave solid minutes offering up double digit nights on numerous occasions (including two monster jams from Barnes in Game 5). Fellow #SplashBrother and Sharp Shooter Klay Thompson fell victim to foul trouble tonight but he did his work early in the series giving the Cavs 34 points in Game 2 after dropping 21 in Game 1. Even Andrew Bogut, the Brazilian Blur Leandro Barbosa and Festus Ezeli all contributed when called upon by coach Steve Kerr.
If you ever needed the definition of what a true TEAM is, top to bottom contributions, on court chemistry as well as off the court – the 2015 Golden State Warriors are as far as you need to look. Much respect for putting together one of the most dominant seasons we have witnessed, true champions and they did it with class. Bay Area Stand UP.
