Educator. Author. Dreamer. Doer. First Aid with Kelly Kinkaid had a very special guest in light of the recent situations with Alton Sterling and Philando Castillo – Dr. Steve Perry. He is not only making incredible strides through education at Capital Prep Magnet School, which sends all of its mostly minority students to four-year colleges but showing the world what happens when you mix genuine care with high expectations for students. After seeing great success at his Hartford school, he is looking to create a similar footprint in Harlem.
Taking an approach of first properly training educators, making sure they truly believe in each student FIRST before getting into the curriculum has been one of the most important factors in helping Capital Prep stand out. They are literally the answer to what happens if teachers actually cared about kids in a way that effectively helped them comprehend and think rather than test cramming or simply testing an ability to regurgitate facts.
What makes it even more refreshing is that their theme is Social Justice and with most of the students being minorities it resonates so strongly that it changes their circumstance of “poverty” from a mental barrier to simply something that can and will be overcome. If you have not heard of Dr. Steve Perry yet, don’t worry this interview will inspire and motivate you to learn more about his approach to education.
