Queen Sugar‘s Dawn Lyen-Gardner and Rutina Wesley stopped by Sway In The Morning and discussed the series and its many variables that make it not only a triumph for them but a staple in the community.
The show is produced by both Ava Duvernay and Oprah Winfrey. The two women gushed about the moment they got the news that they had gotten the roles from Duvernay. Both women explained that they were in moments of complete shock that they were on the phone with Ava Duvernay and even more so that they would be on the show.
“It makes sense that Ava and Oprah would further another sisterhood in the world,” exclaimed Dawn.
The crew then goes into the important conversations that the series sparks. The importance of seeing black people farming, the importance of Nicholas Ashe’s character’s jail run-in performance, and much more.
The series returns to OWN with a two-night premiere OWN on October 3 and 4 at 10pm. Check out the full interview, below.
