“It’s not over until it’s over” seemed to be the recurring theme for Week 2 as both #6 Auburn and #9 Notre Dame narrowly escaped embarrassing losses on the road.
Primetime Matchup: #7 Oregon vs. #5 Michigan State
NBA Champion (and Michigan State alum) Draymond Green joined the College Gameday crew to bring the Spartans that magical touch before they faced off against the explosive Oregon Ducks. Early on, signs appeared that it would be a high scoring outing as both teams scored on their opening possessions. Once things settled in, the battle reached a new level as both sides struggled for each inch and traded blows until the final whistle as the Spartans pulled it out 31-28.
Sway’s Universe College Football Performances of the Week:
Toledo upsets #18 Arkansas for their first ever win against a Top 25 team on the road. Looking at the stat line it would be confusing as to how it happened but this is a perfect case of “Bend Don’t Break” as Toledo got torched for over 400 yards in the air but gave up 0 touchdowns. In fact, they forced Arkansas QB Brandon Allen to throw his first interception since last November. Pure heart, determination and grind on their way to an ugly 16-12 win as the SEC continues to look shaky early in the season.
They say there are no participation awards, if you’re not first you’re last. But, this week we are making an exception for the Jacksonville State Jaguars and their Saturday performance against #6 Auburn. All game they played loose and even as they forced a fumble with less than 3min to go in the 4Q looked calm, collected and even dancing to the stadium PA music. But, that lack of focus may have cost them as they made the critical error that teams do and began to get extremely passive with the play calling. With time winding down and Auburn frantically burning timeouts, all they needed to do was secure one more first down. Unable to do so, they were forced to punt and the nerves began to take over after an only 17 yard punt. Auburn immediately felt a sense of hope marching down the field with a quick TD strike before eventually putting them to rest in OT 27-20. Yet and still, it was an incredible effort by the 41 point underdog.
Sway’s Universe College Football Play of the Week:
#9 Notre Dame was trailing with less than 30 seconds left against unranked opponent Virginia threatening their BCS Playoff hopes. After losing their star Quarterback Malik Zaire in the third quarter with an ankle injury, it seemed as if the 61,500 Cavaliers fans were about to witness a massive upset. If Lee Corso was here, you would get a “Not so fast my friend!” as DeShone Kizer connected with Will Fuller for a 39 yard bomb leaving only 12 seconds on the clock helping the Irish escape 34-27.
