At just 19 years old, rising actress and K.C. Undercover star Zendaya Coleman has exhibited a level of class that’s worth remembering. Despite being dragged into an unnecessary debate regarding her choice to wear dreadlocks to this year’s Oscars, she rose above remarks from Giuliana Rancic that included the offensive, “Like I feel like she smells like patchouli oil. Or weed” with grace.
Now she’s teamed up with Mattel for a new barbie designed entirely in her likeness, locs and all. “I really appreciate that they took the time to make [the doll] super detailed and took time with the hair, because obviously the hair was so important,” said Coleman.
While the doll is currently not available to the public, mass production may be on the way if her fans have anything to say about it. It’s a refreshing step in a more diverse direction, particularly in a nation that has historically excluded people of color from opportunities that would allow them to see their own likeness in things like films and of course, toys.
Speaking about the difficulty of finding a doll that resembled her as a child she explained, “What was Barbie, is no more. Now there is a new a set of Barbies: There’s an Asian Barbie, there’s a Barbie with a shaved head! This is the first Barbie with flat feet! Sweatpants are an option. Baby steps.”
